A good way to begin

I suppose an introduction would be a good way to start. I don't know yet what this blog will become or how I will fill it.

My name is Lindsay. I am twenty-five, have been out of school for a year now, and, having realized that little ever goes according to plan, am contemplating my next major life decision. I am working as a receptionist at a cancer center in the meantime. It is not the most riveting or fulfilling work, but it allows me to buy food, pay my student loans, and purchase the occasional book or wardrobe item.

I am a bit of a higher education junkie, and I hate myself for it a little bit. By the time I decided I needed a break I had three degrees, two senior projects, two theses, and four semesters of summer school under my belt. I still feel like I haven't learned all the things I'd like to learn.

I earned my Bachelor of Music in Music History and my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing, Poetry Emphasis, at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. My honors thesis was on Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's use of visual and musical color in Sadko; my senior poetry portfolio, Aviaries, was influenced by Joshua Poteat's Ornithologies and Wallace Steven's Harmonium. I earned my Master of Music in Musicology at The Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. My Master's thesis was on Vachel Lindsay's performed poetry (the fact that his surname is the same as my first name is pure coincidence). (If you're familiar with or interested in any of these things, I love to nerd out about them.)

By the spring of 2011 I was feeling the inevitable burnout my peers warned me about. So I decided to put a PhD on the back burner and try my hand at being an adult. That's when things began to unravel. I didn't know what I would be doing in the interim. Maybe working in publishing, the non-profit sector, teaching community college, copywriting--entry level, of course, but something, anything, through which I could put my skills to use. What I encountered was six months unemployed in my mom's guest room, a steady string of "You're not quite what we're looking for" and "If only you had previous work experience," and a three-month stint in retail that plummeted in flames.

Which brings us to now.

I'm living with my boyfriend, Christopher, waiting while he finishes a degree in Library Science and trying to figure out which life-path to pursue.

I don't know what this blog will become or what I hope to gain from it, but writing has always been cathartic. Maybe one day I'll figure it out.

  1. Okay, I'm really glad to find your blog, and am curious to hear more about your life and life on the opposite coast! I just turned 25 as well, and while I've found a way to earn a living in a field I love, I feel like I have no designs on the future, unlike everyone around me. :-)
